چکیده

Mixtures of Lennard-Jones and Stockmayer molecules provide a convenient model system which can be used to study the effects of composition and polarity in polar/non-polar mixtures. The structure and phase behaviour of such mixtures are currently topics of great interest Eli. Since the Stockmayer potential, qSs, is obtained from the usual Lennard-Jones potential, ~buj, by the sole addition of a point dipole interaction, the free energy of mixing can be determined in a particularly simple and straightforward manner. Moreover, knowledge of the free energy of the pure components is not required, as can be seen by considering the following two-stage process. Firstly a fraction of atoms, x, in a pure Lennard-Jones liquid is changed into molecules with a moment of inertia I. One may think of these as Stockmayer molecules with dipole moment # = 0. The free energy per particle (in units of the LJ well depth ~) of this ideal mixture is given by

Lennard-Jones Energy Parameter for Pure Fluids from Scaled Particle Theory

By considering the fact that the surface tension of a real fluid arises from a combination of both repulsive and attractive forces between molecules, a new expression for the interfacial tension has been derived from scaled particle theory (SPT)  based on the work of cavity formation and the interaction energy between molecules. At the critical temperature, the interfacial tension between c...

Local Compositions and Thermodynamics of Polar/non-polar Mixtures

Results of computer simulations are presented for the thermodynamic properties of mixing and the local compositions for mixtures of Stockmayer and Lennard-Jones fluids with varying concentrations and dipole strengths The results show a strong asymmetry with respect to the concentration which is attributed to the influence of the orientation dependence of the dipoledipole interaction and explain...

Oscillatory Melting Temperature of Stockmayer Fluid in Slit Pores

The melting transition of bulk and confined Stockmayer fluids (μ = 1) is analyzed using molecular dynamic simulations. The solid−liquid coexistence temperature is evaluated using a modified three-stage pseudosupercritical transformation path. The bulk melting temperature calculated using the aforementioned method agrees well with the literature value. Melting temperatures of the Stockmayer flui...

THE DENSITY PROFILES OF A LENNARD -JONES FLUID CONFINED TO A SLIT

The structure of fluids confined by planar walls is studied using density functional theory. The density functional used is a generalized form of the hypernetted chain (HNC) functional which contains a term third order in the density. This term is chosen to ensure that the modified density functional gives the correct bulk pressure. The proposed density functional applied to a Lennard-Jones...

Phase coexistence of a Stockmayer fluid in an applied field.

We examine two aspects of Stockmayer fluids which consists of point dipoles that additionally interact via an attractive Lennard-Jones potential. We perform Monte Carlo simulations to examine the effect of an applied field on the liquid-gas phase coexistence and show that a magnetic fluid phase does exist in the absence of an applied field. As part of the search for the magnetic fluid phase, we...
